Miniature Carousel Builders Corner

This month's featured carousel was built by Dan Robinson of New York. Dan was only 12 years old when he started building this carousel in 1995 and completed it at the age of 14. He is the youngest member of the Miniature Carousel Builders who has constructed a carousel.

His father provided assistance with the framework and motorizing. The carousel platform is mounted on a 'Lazy Susan' which is attached to the table top base. The motor is mounted to the rear of the table on the outside edge of the carousel.

Dan is currently working on his second carousel.

THE DETAILS:

  • Base: 48" Square
  • Carousel: 32" Diameter; 12" Height
  • No sweeps. Solid wood top
  • Three rows
  • Type: Stationery
  • Lights: None
  • Original Design

This carousel features 28 wooden animals, 26 horses and 2 zebras, purchased from a craft shop. The horses are very detailed and patterned after the classic carousel horses. Dan painted them with acrylic paints, using a dental pick for details. Two chariots are included. Dan hand painted the 16 scenery panels (8 center and 8 rounding board pictures) with local scenes, including the NY City Skyline. US flags are mounted atop the rounding board panels.

The hand made band organ is located on the corner of the table top with speakers mounted inside

Dan has been unable to exhibit the carousel because it is not portable. However, he has displayed photographs of his creation at Grand Rapids, MI and North Tonawanda, NY.
