WURLITZER CALIOLA RESTORATION (Part 4)
FINAL DISASSEMBLY OF THE CALIOLA

by Dr. Bill Black

In PHOTO A the back rank of pipes have been removed showing the back end of the windchest and the pushrods for the pallets.

In PHOTO B the remaining two ranks of pipes have been removed along with their toe board.

PHOTO C The windchest has been removed from the organ and is shown resting on one end. It is easily removed from the organ by removing several screws. The wind connector is fastened to the underside of the windchest and can be seen on the upper end of the windchest.

In PHOTO D the pressure pump is exposed. The wind connector mentioned above is held on the pressure pump by means of four threaded rods bent into sort of a dog leg shape. These are threaded and screwed into the pump. They hold the connector in place on the pump by the pressure from the dog leg catching the edge of the connector in four places. They can be rotated out of the way to allow the wind connector to be free of the pump for removal.

PHOTO E shows the Caliola case with all the internal parts removed. With the parts removed the case can be turned upside down to inspect the underside more closely which reveals some damage and a previous repair.

PHOTO F shows the internal parts of the machine arrayed on the shop floor. Next month we will repair the damage to the case.

Dr. Bill Black is one of the nation's most knowledgeble Wurlitzer band organ experts. He has made recordings of many band organs and other mechanical music machines which are available for purchase in our Gift Shop .
